Emma's Happy Hands
26 March 2018
Year 8 student Emma gives up her Saturdays for local charity Happy Hands. The Deafness Resource Centre based in St Helens provides services for D/deaf people, their carers and families. They offer information and guidance to other Service Providers across the borough to ensure that their services are fully accessible for D/deaf people.
Both Emma's grandparents are deaf and she has been signing since she was about 5 years old. However about 12 months' ago Emma decided that she wanted to learn more so that they could communicate with each other even better. She has thoroughly enjoyed learning how to sign and she is still learning every week. The weekly group is a mix of social, play and learning and it has has given her confidence and she has met many new friends.
Emma has done amazingly well and even signed a video for British Sign Language Week to explain why she signs, using the hashtag #whyisign.
