Whole School Advent Mass

17 December 2015

Yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 16th December, the whole school came together to celebrate Mass in the Sports Hall. The service was led by our chair of governors and school chaplain, Rev Philip Swanson.  It began with the whole school singing ‘Little Donkey’written by English songwriter Eric Boswell which describes the journey by Mary, the Mother of Jesus to Bethlehem on the donkey of the title.

After the opening prayer, Liberty, Rebecca and Mia led us in the penitential rite where we reflected on the times when we may not have used our God given gifts and talents in the right way.

The first reading was from Isaiah 9: 1-6 by Jess and Jack.  For to us a child is born, to us a son is given: and the government shall be on his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

We then sang 'Away in a Manger'. The real author is unknown but he music was composed by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895.

The Gospel reading from Luke 2: 15-20 was read by Cameron and told the story of the shepherds who, after finding the baby lying in the manger, returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The bidding prayers were led by Ellis, Jack, Daisy, Connor, Faye and Stuart.

Fr Phil spoke to us about the true meaning of Christmas explaining that God sent his only Son so that we may gather together to celebrate and pray for own needs and for our friends, that the peace and joy of heaven may be theirs.

The bread and wine were brought to the altar by Leah, Rebekah, Sophie and Georgia.

The words of the Eucharistic Prayer were spoken by Fr Phil and were followed by the Lord's Prayer.

During the distribution of Holy Communion, 'Christmas Lullaby'composed by Jason Robert Brown was sung by Natasha.

'Silent Night' was our communion carol composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr.

Our final hymn was 'Go Tell It on the Mountain' - an African-American spiritual song, compiled by John Wesley Work, Jr., dating back to at least 1865.

At the end of Mass Miss Twist said 'A huge thank you to everyone for your contribution to today’s mass. It was a delightful experience for all of us at the end of a very busy term.'

Miss Hughes, our curriculum leader for religious education thanked everyone for their help with Mass saying 'I could not have done it without all your support whether it was a special job you had or your kind words!  It was great to celebrate Christmas all together like that so thanks again!'
