Perfect end to a five year battle
17 May 2016
St Cuthbert's retained the St Helens Cup in a thrilling game at Langtree Park on Wednesday, 11th May 2016.
The massive Hope team got off to a quick start going 4-0 up after a bruising 20 minutes in which neither team took a backwards step. Prime example of this commitment was Matthew Holland, year 9, taking a huge kick where many others would have hid.
That score actually settled St Cuthbert's and they began to show the flair, speed and creativity that has enabled them to dominate this competition for five years.
Strong running from Buckley, Crosby and Sutcliffe allowed Nash and Martin to show their creativity and Buckley scored with a well placed kick. It was then McSpirit's turn to turn on the turbos after a line busting break from Martin. He scored again from close range soon after and Cuthies went in 16-4 up at the break.
The fight back from Hope was admirable and they brought the scores level on the back of some penalties and good play. The two teams continued to hammer at each other for the remainder of the game.
No one deserved to lose for the effort they put in - and no one did. The game finished 16-16 and the cup was shared - a perfect ending, as the two teams have closely contested 4 of the 5 finals.
Captain Lewis Martin was presented a fully deserved MOM trophy by Alex Murphy after an all action display.
This Year 11 team have been outstanding over the 5 years and I am very proud of the way the lads have developed as rugby players and into young men.
